The IDEBATE Rwanda team in cooperation with Writing Our world and Pan African Movement started the inaugural debate for the AU 50 years jubilee debate competition. As the African union, in the past the organisation of the African Unity was celebrating its 50 years of existence since 1963, this was a golden opportunity for the Youth of Africa to be able to debate about the effectiveness of the African Union while at the same time Thinking hard about how to make the dream of the founding fathers a reality, how to bring Africans together in the spirit of oneness.
This debate was to take place at King David Academy where the students from 12 schools of Rwanda and 15 schools from Uganda were to meet battling for the title of the champion of the regional debate competition on the AU.
This debate competition is happening in two cities, the first debate competition happening in Kigali on may 11th and the second one happening in Kampala on May 25th.
A. THE COMPETITION:
The debate competition was attended by 15 teams from Uganda and 25 teams from Rwanda. The debates were great. Out of the three rounds: 8 teams had a perfect score. The final was between Two schools from Rwanda Lycee de Kigali, Gashora Girls Academy.
The debate was won by a 5-4 by the Gashora Girls Academy. The best speaker for the competition was won by EBISE Emiru. She’s a debater from Saint Mary college in Kisubi and is in form 3.
When asked what she thought she said she was shocked at the news of being the best speaker and that she is glad because she learned many things
The winning Team was made out of Uwase Angela, Ingabire Grace and Elizabeth Queen.
