After missing our flight, we hit the Greens Boro runway at around 8 pm to my surprise. After all the travelling around Washington DC and getting lost was quite an experience when all you could do is get a taxi and the only directions you have are “ Take me to the Reagan airport”. While in the plane, I tried to imagine what it would be like at wake Forest University, was it cold or rather warm? Was it going to be an interesting stay? Who will I meet and more!
Little did I know the next day was going to be a blast and we would be sitted at the wake forest debate squad room with the whole debate team. It was beautifully decorated with incredible trophies that had names dating from all the way back to 1835 when their debate program started. Each trophy bore names of the debaters with the positions they emerged with during the competitions. I could read a series of legacies left behind and the feet that would fill them. As soon as the squad meeting commenced, the debaters started with hailing shout outs as a way of appreciation. As I was leaving, I just could not think of a better way of to extend my gratitude to the wake debate but to shout out to all the amazing people I met.
Shout out to Jarrod Atchinson for introducing us to such an amazing team and more so the great debate that we got to be a part of, for words could not explain how grateful we are for always making sure that we were doing okay and giving us a fabulous American experience to hold on to. Shout out to Christina for the late pizza dinner, it was great talking about our cultures and getting to know our differences (ps I loved your bike!). Shout out to Amanda Pham, who took us to all the amazing classes that were an eye opener to the very challenging concerns such as religion, politics and racism as well. I must say it was an amazing visit to the classes, I was greatly honored. Shout out to Joe and Ryan with whom we had a chance to debate with. Lots of debate styles (didn’t know poetry and rap could be so of great impact). That really caught me by surprise, I am glad I learnt something new. Shout out to Daniel for driving us back to the hotel (I know you were nervous), shout out to Curtis, Charles, Katie, Linda, Candis with whom we had amazing dinner during our stay at wake forest.
Happiness means a lot when shared, and I am glad the iDebate team shared the joy with you. After 3 good days shared, I must say I learnt a lot from you guys and it was a pleasure meeting the team. We never know what wonderful people we will meet until the warmth of their presence and laughter fills each moment we spend with them.
