We all woke up to a beautiful Saturday in Washington D.C and throughout the night we made our final preparations for the MVUBU debate competition. Getting to Debate different Americans teams was a big challenge especially knowing how elite the game is in most schools. Before I go any further, I was so nervous especially when I thought how big these teams are and how successful the speakers are. My debate partner Teta shared the same feelings though she kept on giving courage. Come 9am, we had our first round and recalling what my coach had told me about the team, I was losing my nerves.
The first round was fair to me because I thought we were going to be defeated with a knockout but a few minutes into the debate, we were top on our game. By the end of the first round we had seen a whole picture of how most debates will look like. By the way before I go any further in our first debate round in the USA we had our first win against Rutgers College. As the debates went on we faced different challenges but we just made share we reached our number one goal which was debate to learn from your opponent. The whole experience was a great challenge to us but a learning one throughout the whole competition.
Debating American universities was a great opportunity for us to see how much we need to learn but also how far we have come in making sure we improve our art of debate. As I conclude, I would personally thank everyone that has helped us come on this wonderful learning experience and acknowledge that the game of debate like any other competitive game can be a platform to learn, share, create friendship and more.
