THE VOLLEYBALL TEAM? EVERYONE ASKED

Hurry up everyone called my phone. The final day that we had all been waiting for had arrived, so excited I felt like I had butterflies in my stomach. At 6:31pm, I meet the whole debate team at the Kigali International airport, so excited we said our final regards to parents and friends and then went through check in. As we moved throughout the airport, everyone noticed us because of our blue track suits. Are you the volleyball team, everyone asked? Debate team we answered. For some the second question was; so what is debate? Well I should say we had to explain the whole concept for some people but for all the others all they could say was have a nice trip during the debate USA tour.

After 30 minutes of check in, we all sat waiting for the KLM  plane and guess what all we could think of was the final destination. At 8.30, we finally had the sound call that we should board the plane and from that moment now we felt the reality of  travelling. Imaginations and questions and of course our song ‘we are going’ was all we could do. The moment finally arrived THE USA DEBATE TOUR and final destination Atlanta Georgia.

The journey on board was of course another wonderful experience and by that I mean the food and of course jokes. Long as the journey seemed we didn’t care much since we all knew what  we had gone through to get to that day. As usual Jean Michel  never lacks sleep in just 20 minutes from takeoff, he started dozing off. Well all I can say is we all had to look for some sleep since we were going to be on board for long time before we could arrive in Amsterdam in transit.

In the early morning, we arrived in Amsterdam and quickly moved out to clear and get everything done with our travel documents. The short stay in Amsterdam was a great experience since we all moved around and ate at different shops. After hours of waiting we started moving towards our gate and guess what! Destination Washington D.C.

For long we had been waiting for this moment so as we sat on the plane to the USA, we all were so excited. After a short prayer, the plane set off. The journey was a long one but like the other it was another wonderful experience. After 8 hours of travel, we finally arrived in D.C. Now before I go any further, I have to confess that America is really beautiful and just from the airport, I got a glimpse of how things were going to be throughout the tour. In my mind I could imagine the beautiful scenes we were going to see. With great humor, Mr. Kevin Bertram welcomed us to the USA. After some minutes, we moved on to the security check in and booked the next tickets to Atlanta. A few minutes that we had, we moved around and of course enjoyed our first meal in America. In the early hours of the evening, we boarded our flight to Georgia and arrived9 pm . After 30 hours of travel from Kigali to Georgia, we arrived in our first stop for the tour; Dr. Mike David Hester the Director of Honors college at University of west Georgia warmly welcomed us  at the airport and after meeting up with the other 2 team members Dadi and Teta, we drove off to rest at the Quality inn in Carrolton. All in all it was a wonderful experience and especially the hospitality we have been given since arrival.
