6 young debaters from Rwanda are traveling to North America to share the story of recovery of Rwanda through the eyes of a post genocide generation
Twenty years ago, Rwanda was in the darkest place a country can be in. The horrific 1994 genocide was raging over the country and destroying it to the core. Now 20 years later, although Rwanda has fought hard to rise above her past, the rest of the world still knows Rwanda for “the country where the genocide happened.” As everybody says.
Idebate Rwanda is a group of young people who grew up in a struggling country. We grew up seeing Rwanda put in place a vision 2020 to help her grow economically and put countless of reconciliation programs to restore the trust and sense of community among Rwandans that was lost that day in 1994 when Rwandans killed fellow Rwandans.
Idebate Rwanda is a group of ambitious children of Rwanda who hope to get the word out there, we are all about letting the world learn about how far Rwanda has come by being the best we can be through debate. Imagine a generation which learnt how to communicate well with each other, a whole population of critical thinkers, people who can disagree with arguments and with no need of weapons to prove a point.
Idebate Rwanda is a Youth NGO that is working at fostering the power of debate and free speech in a country healing from wounds.
This year marks the 20th genocide anniversary, for that Idebate Rwanda is organizing a tour of North America. This tour will aim at building relationships, connections and will help us groom and raise a new generation of leaders. We will share all the struggles of being a post genocide generation that are most times ignored as well as the honest brutal realities of our generation. Idebate Rwanda brings together students from all walks of life to debate and argue to find solutions to some of the most pressing problems that Rwanda faces, they learn to disagree peacefully as well as gain critical thinking skills and develop communication and networking abilities. We are a lively group of young people trying to make their country a better place for the generations to come. We hope that our children will be born and raised in a society where the genocide is only in the history books and they have less struggles to grow up with. WE need your help.
