Until last week when we got the wonderful message from the Visa officer “ Please come back tomorrow to get your visa”, It had never daunt on me that we were coming back to the USA. I had intentionally or unintentionally blocked the excitement or joy because I didn’t want to get too excited and we didn’t get the visa, It would have crushed my spirit. But for the last days, I have literally not slept because of the excitement. The excitement of going back to visit our friends and the excitement of meeting new people.
This year the tour journey has been so different, first of all because some of us have an idea of how the tour is and an experience on what to expect. It has also been different because we got more response from students from iDebate, more students applied and those who applied were all very competitive and it was so hard to decide.
This year we are a group of 5, Me, Jesh, Monique, Maya and Clemence and we are all going to be together for the next 6 weeks. It’s so nice seeing in their eyes, the excitement of going to a land that they have only dreamt off or seen in the movies but also their deep insecurities and fears wondering if they are going to be as good as those of last year or even good enough to debate against their American counterparts.
I have come to the conclusion that the tour will always be a mixture of emotions, on one side excitement and joy and on the other side a fear of the unknown and a fear and intimidation of debating against people who are more experienced than you.
What a beautiful Journey.
