Debate League

A competitive person always wins.” Our monthly competitions serve as a venue for our students to practice all they learn during respective training sessions as they become better speakers not only theoretically but practically.

Our students meet on a monthly basis to debate about Public Policy Issues. Our debate leagues take place in 3 provinces (Kigali, Eastern Province and Southern Province of Rwanda) with over 115 schools and more than 5000 students.

Objectives

Create a Network of Debate clubs in Rwanda

Research shows that participation in debate increases a student’s ability to think critically and creatively about problems in their communities. At iDebate, we are hoping to create debate clubs all over Rwanda to offer opportunities for students who want to sharpen their thinking and speaking skills. Our vision is to ensure that each school in Rwanda has a debate club.

Improve the critical thinking and Public speaking skills of Students

By participating in debate, we are aiming at improving the critical thinking of our students. Critical Thinking is a habit of the mind characterized by the comprehensive exploration of issues ideas, artifacts, and events before accepting or formulating an opinion of conclusion. Critical thinking is necessary for the 21st century.

To Create a platform for young people to share their ideas

Young people represent not only the future of the country but also its current force. In Debate, we are providing a platform for young people to share their ideas about the different issues that are affecting their communities and see how to participate in providing solutions.

Our League Divisions

Beginners League

Our beginners league stands as an entry point to schools/students that are new in our program. The division focuses on dealing with the fear of speaking in public and making students more confident through the fundamentals of Debate.

Our model is laid out for a student to be part of this division for at least 12 months before they graduate to the “Advanced Debate League”

How does this work?

Student Led Competition

These small competitions were created as a way to encourage beginners debaters to get a platform to become confident speakers on a small scale before attending to big leagues.

The competition has a maximum of 4 participating schools and through “elimination” debate format they are able to complete the competition is 3hrs (an afternoon)

Are you interested in hosting a funded debate competition at your school?
